Cynthia

Thanks for your comment on TopVeg. I wonder when you plant the carrots? There are definitely two periods in the UK summer when the carrot fly hatch - & attack! You could well be uncovering you carrots in a 'safe period'.

It is important to remove all smells of 'carrot digging' - take leaves & any discarded carrots right away from the carrot bed, otherwise the carrot fly will home-in on the smell!

Thanks for visiting

I keep my carrot beds covered immediately after sowing, and have found that I can remove the cover once the carrots reach a decent size. I don't know if the fly leaves the larger carrots alone, or if something else is going on. Also, I did not know about the 2 foot barrier. I'll try that!

[...] Carrot fly travel close to the ground, and a barrier 2 foot high will interupt their flight path, forcing the fly to take another route. If carrots are planted in a container at least 2 foot off the ground, the carrot flies will just zoom past the side of the container, and not bother the carrots growing inside.
