Vegetables to plant in January
Snowy day, bored gardener, who disappears & returns with bounty!
![]()
-
Sharpe’s Express early potatoes
-
red onions
-
white onions
-
shallots
-
garlic
Still rather early for planting, but the benefits of covering the plot will now be revealed.Â
The strip has been covered for 8 weeks, so is quite dry and slightly warmer than the uncovered plot. The shallots will soon be in.Â

Can I grow red onions where I have grown leeks and garlic last year or do I need to rotate these crops?
Also, which is the best site to plant red onions? Do they need full sun or can they be in partial shade?

Hi Sara
Onions & garlic should not be planted in the same place for more than two years in a row. There doesn’t seem to be much that bothers alliums; garlic in particular is very low maintainance. As long as the nutrients taken out are replaced, and no diseases are present, you should be OK.
Red Onions grow best in full sunlight and well drained soils.
Thanks for your question and good luck
