Jobs for August in the Vegetable Garden

Posted by TopVeg - July 31st, 2007

August is the month for harvesting. But spend some time planning for the winter.

Sow Parsley for winter cropping

Sow into a seedbed or pots for transplanting later:

Perpetual spinach beet, radicchio, cabbages, winter lettuce & spring onions.

Harvest:

Remaining soft fruit, such as blackberries.

French & runner beans, peas, potatoes, cabbages, calabrese, onions, carrots, courgettes and sweetcorn.

Salad leaves, lettuces, & tomatoes.

Other jobs:

Water regularly, mulch & keep down weeds by hoeing.

Stake all tall plants to stop them falling over.

Pinch out the top of outdoor tomatoes when 4 - 5 trusses have set.

Dry onions on the surface of the soil if dry, or indoors if wet.

Prepare new strawberry beds and plant out runners.
