The Leek Bed is Growing in the Vegetable Garden.
The three varieties of leeks which were transplanted six weeks ago have set off well and grown into strong plants.
The mid-season leek, Pandora, is romping away and will be the first to harvest.

My leeks that you sent me are doing well too - thank you.

Cracking leeks! I’m particularly impressed by your zero-tolerance approach to weeds. Not a one to be seen!

Hi Soilman
Nothing like a good bed of leeks to make you feel good!
The zero-weed policy is helped be friable soils which have not been walked on, so it is much easier to weed. Narrow beds accessed from the walkways keep us off the beds, so we do not tread the soil down.
Our soils were originally difficult, heavy clays, which set like concrete. But the addition of sand has helped, by keeping the clay particles apart.
Having enough room between the rows to use hand tools for hoeing & breaking the soils, allows a little & often approach. Hitting the weeds before they get too big, & before they have had time to develop a strong root system, makes it easier, too!
Thanks for your comment
