Late Planted Early Potatoes.

Posted by TopVeg - August 30th, 2007

When the early new potatoes had been dug at the beginning of June, some chitted Maris Bard seed potatoes were planted in their place.

MBard2These late planted early potatoes have just been dug. The potato haulm has remained healthy, but they went through a very dry period, and some of the tubers have suffered from corky scab. In spite of this, they have yielded a substantial 2 kilos from one root.

These Maris Bard potatoes have been in the ground for about 12 weeks. The other Maris Bard were planted as second earlies in late February, and we have just finished lifting them. They were in the ground longer than these late planted early potatoes.

Maris-Bard-PotatoThe late planted Maris Bard taste more like new potatoes and have a firmer flesh than the M Bard which we have just finished.

The conclusion is that it is well worth planting a few seed potatoes, after the first early potatoes have been lifted.

  1. Thanks for visiting my blog and I’m happy to have found yours. I used to grow most of my vegetables and you may get me inspired to plant a fall crop. It’s been so hot I’ve let everything go. I have covered boxes so it’s not too late for me to plant lettuce, kale, spinach, broccoli, etc. because I can cover them when we get freeze warnings. I need to get going soon though as this is pretty late to start. Just leaving this comment is getting me inspired.

  2. Hi Carver

I hope we can inspire you - even if it is to put in a row of perpetual spinach! It is so good just to be able to nip out and grab a handful for a salad, or to make that special difference to a lasagne. Or stir fry spinach with garlic to get the taste buds going! One row will not demand too much care and attention!

    Keep in touch

  3. Nice item on second planting of earlies. I’ve not tried that as such, but this Sunday will be planting my “Xmas Harvest ” Maris Pipers ( 5 seeds this week) and a further 5 to be planted 7days later and finally 5 more , 7 days after that. Wouldn’t it be lovely to get earlies from the garden on Xmas morning!
