Sow

Swiss chard, perpetual spinach & mixed winter salad leaves directly into the vegetable garden.

Lamb’s lettuce, salad onions, mustard & cress can be grown under cloches for winter salads

Planting out (later in the month) seedling:

Perpetual spinach, radicchio, spring cabbages, & chicory.

Harvest:

Broad, French & runner beans, peas, cabbages, onions, carrots, lettuce, courgettes, tomatoes, marrows and sweetcorn.

Lift main crop potatoes as soon as the skins are set, if slugs or wire-worms are about. Slugs are a big problem in the vegetable garden this year and ruin the tubers by filling them with holes.

Autumn raspberries and melons.

Other jobs:

Keep celery well watered.

Earth up celeriac and leeks.

Cut off this summer’s fruiting blackberry, tayberry and raspberry canes at ground level and tie in the new canes produced this year.

Order new fruit bushes for winter planting

Bend onion tops over to encourage ripening.

  1. I didn’t realise I need to earth up my leeks. I will get onto that and then give on update on the Interblog Leek Project. Thanks.
