Thompson and Morgan the tops in GardeningWhich

Posted by TopVeg - September 28th, 2007

seedResearch by Gardening Which has shown that the quality of seeds sold in packets is abysmal.

Every packet of vegetable seed tested had at least one dead seed, and the number of dead seeds ranged from 1 - 72%. Also, an average of 20% of the seeds produced abnormal seedlings.

Official standards say that more than 75% of lettuce seeds and 70% of spring onion seeds must germinate. Only six companies produced vegetable seeds meeting these standards.
The best supplier was Thompson and Morgan, with 83 % of their seeds producing healthy plant.

  1. I heard a little about this on the radio yesterday - shocking, isn’t it? Especially when you consider how expensive most of those packets are. Good to have the link to the original research, so thanks for that (blogging is SO much better than other media, which don’t bother with links!)
