How to Store Apples Picked in the Garden.
Late season apples will keep for six months or so, if picked at the right time & stored carefully. Only perfect apples should be put into store. Any spoiled apples, which are bruised or pecked, and fallen apples should be eaten immediately because they will soon rot and not keep.
The apple store should be:
- dark
- airy
- cool - about 4C
- frost free
- separately, so that the skins do not touch. Either roll newspaper up, and place the apples around the twisted rolls, or wrap each apple in paper
- label the apples
- check the apples regularly, and remove any that are rotting immediately
Apples stored correctly will be very welcome in the kitchen, throughout the winter, for use in pies, crumbles and sauces.
