Earth Up Leeks in the Vegetable Garden

Posted by TopVeg - October 8th, 2007

earthing-up-leeksEarthing up leeks, blanches the leaves so that the length of white stem is increased.

To earth up leeks:

  • gently draw dry soil up to the stems when they are well developed
  • pull the soil up regularly, a little at a time, as the stem grows, to ridging-up-leeksproduce a ridge
  • no soil should be allowed to fall between the leaves, because the leeks will be gritty when cooked
  • collars or pipes are sometimes put round the leeks to keep the soil away from the stems
  • finish earthing up in late October

Earthing up leeks in the vegetable garden, regularly, through the growing season will increase the amount of tender white stalk on the leek.
