Sage Wins Herb Character Competition

Posted by TopVeg - October 15th, 2007

Sage+Herb+CharacterA herb character, entered by Mel of BeanSprouts, comprising a picture of Einstein crowned with sprigs of Sage hair, has won the TopVeg Herb Character competition.

Judge & TopVeg Art Consultant, Will, said “To match Sage with Einstein demonstrates a stroke of genius! “

Albert Einstein, 1879-1955, has been named the “Person of the Century”, & the greatest physicist of all time.

Sage has been used for centuries to strengthen the nervous system, improve memory, and sharpen the senses. In 1597 the herbalist John Gerard remarked that Sage was “singularly good for the head and quickeneth the nerves and memory.”

More recently, The Medicinal Plant Research Centre (MPRC)

at the Universities of Newcastle and Northumbria have been testing these old-fashioned claims. In 2003, the MPRC found that people given sage oil tablets performed much better in a “word recall test”, possibly because the active ingredient in sage may boost levels of a chemical that helps transmit messages in the brain.

So Mel’s entry of a Sage herb character showing Einstein sprouting sage will receive the prize, which is a packet of herb seeds!

Herb-Character—Charley-ChSecond place went to Charlie Chives entered by Sara of Farming Friends. Judge, Will, said ‘This clever and amusing character reflects the spirit of the competition.’

Thank you to everyone who took part!

  1. This is very exciting. Thanks so much for choosing my entry. Once the idea struck me it took me about 15 minutes to make the image using Windows Paint (I’m too cheap to buy Photoshop). My other idea was to make “Rosemary’s Baby” with a scary-looking devil baby in a rosemary bush. So I wouldn’t say the Einstein idea was a stroke of genius, just the product of a warped imagination.

  2. Glad you are pleased! Sorry we did not get a chance to see Rosemary’s baby - though it does sound a bit scary!

  3. What a deserving winner Mel is as the Einstein Sage figure is excellent. I’m glad Charley Chives got second place. Thanks for this great competition.
