Plane Trees - Platanus × hispanica

Posted by TopVeg - October 22nd, 2007

PlaneTreeLondon Plane trees (latin name - Platanus × hispanica) are quite magnificent:

  • deciduous
  • grow up to 50m

The flowers of the Plane Tree are wind pollinated and the seeds are dispersed by wind. The fruits dangle in a ball shape, and each fruit is made up of hundreds of small seeds.

Each tiny seed has a tuft of bristly fibres, which act as a parachute when dispersed by the wind, in the same way as dandelion seeds.
