Growing Winter Tomatoes
Tomatoes need a certain amount of direct sunlight daily.
- Winter light isn’t enough to grow tomatoes
- Artificial light can be used
- Fluorescent lights are energy efficient and economical
- Timing of the additional illumination is important
- Duration of the dark period is just as much a factor in how well the plant does as the length of the light period.
Tomatoes and peppers require a combination of warm-white/cool-white fluorescent during winter months.
If winter tomatoes do not receive enough light, they will not flower & become tall and spindly.

Wow, totally impressed. I had no idea you COULD grow tomatoes in winter. Presumably you need a heat source in the greenhouse, too?

Hi Soilman
Yes - you do need heat, but the lighting is the tricky bit to get right. They taste fantastic!

Hi there, saw this posting and wondered whether you could help me find some active tomato plants for a photographic shoot next week (15th January 2008). I’m based in London and working as a photographic stylist - and my photographer client has asked me to come up with the impossible - I thought. If you can help - or know anyone who might be able to help - I’d be very glad to hear from you.
Best
