How to Store your Garden Produce - Book Review

Posted by TopVeg - December 27th, 2007

storeHow to Store your Garden Produce by Piers Warren with illustrations by Chris Winn was first published in 2002. It is a key to self-sufficiency, showing how to eat home-grown goodness all the year round.

The book has two sections:

  • the methods of storage - including freezing, clamping, drying, pickles etc..
  • the produce - listing each fruit and vegetable with suitable storage methods.

For example, it is possible to look up broad beans - to discover that the best ways of storage are either freezing or broad bean wine! French beans, however, can be dried, as well as frozen.

How to Store your Garden Produce is a very useful book for the vegetable gardener to have as a reference.

  1. Hello friends :) I haven’t visited for a while, but wanted to wish you all a happy holiday season and new year!

The book sounds great…I have a similar one from Rodale called, “Stocking Up III”. I used it often when I was home full time and put more effort into the garden. Although, from time to time I buy bushels of produce when the price is right and refer back to it. Everyone should have such a guide.

  2. Hi Lynn

Good to hear from you. Always good to have a book on the shelf to refer to - when suddenly faced with a pile of produce - & you can’t remember the best way for that particular vegetable! Stored properly they retain their goodness and flavour!
    Best wishes
