When the ferns have turned yellow:

  • cut them down to 2.5cm (1in) above ground level
  • a hedge trimmer can be used
  • remove & burn the old stems to destroy overwintering Asparagus Beetle (Latin name - Crioceris asparagi)
  • mulch the asparagus bed with well rotted organic matter

The huge asparagus ferns that developed at the end of the summer have been feeding the roots to prepare for next year’s harvest. Now the ferns are dying off they can be cut back. If they are left they will provide a habitat for the Asparagus beetles.
