How to Look After the Easter Cactus

Posted by TopVeg - January 27th, 2008

The Easter Cactus is an epiphyte, therefor use potting compost with a little peat mould.

Keep the plant growing right through the autumn and winter.

Allow the Easter Cactus to rest after mid-February by:

  • reducing water
  • stopping applications of liquid manure.

As soon as the flower buds appear:

  • increase watering
  • do not turn the pot
  • shade against strong sunlight

During the summer, plunge the Easter Cactus plant into a shady part of the garden.

Bring indoors mid October and keep in a moderately warm room.

If re-potting is necessary do it immediately after flowering.

Propagate by cuttings. Root in sandy soil then re-pot in small pots. Often the plant is grafted onto the lower stem of Peiriskia or the real leaf cactus.

Specialists do not agree about the name of ‘Easter Cactus’ which may be Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri or Epiphyllopsis gaertneri.
