Jobs for February in the Vegetable Garden
- indoors from seed in trays or pots - early beetroot, broad beans, spinach, summer cabbage, calabrese, globe artichoke and lettuce
- outside from seed under cloches in mild areas - beetroot, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves, spinach
- in the garden as soon as the ground is workable - onion sets, shallots and garlic
Plant
- rhubarb & cover to force early stalks
- Jerusalem artichoke tubers
Early sprouting broccoli, cabbages, sprouts, kale, leeks, celery and parsnips
Other jobs:Apply fertiliser to: vegetable garden before sowing early crops; over-wintered crops such as broad beans, onions and cabbage; gooseberries & currants
dig if vegetable garden is dry
cut down autumn-fruiting raspberry canes to ground level and mulch
continue to chit potatoes
There are lots of jobs to do in the vegetable garden in February, but do not go on the soil if it is wet.
