Harvest Carrots through the Winter

Posted by TopVeg - February 23rd, 2008

pulled-carrotsAn early variety of carrots, sown in late summer, have been harvested throughout the winter.
The carrots were sown in early July and left in a polytunnel. They were not thinned, but have still grown to a good size. They were relatively small when harvested in November, but have grown well since then. They still have that fresh young-carrot flavour.
These photos were taken in mid February and show that the carrots look fresh and have been well worth growing.

If an early variety of carrot is sown late in the season, they will provide fresh carrots throughout the winter.

  1. If you don’t have a polytunnel (or if one would blow away where you live ;) ), I have had pretty good luck wintering over carrots just by mulching them in a bit with compost or compost/straw mix. Later in the season, especially if they get a warm spell, the roots might crack a bit, but the taste is great and it sure is nice to harvest fresh veg in the winter!!

  2. Hi Julie
A compost mulch is a great tip. I remember seeing branches of pine trees over leeks one winter in a vegetable garden in Switzerland.
We do have problems with polytunnels blowing away, too!
