Nutritional Value of Leeks

Leek-harvestedLeeks have excellent nutritional value.

Leeks contain:

  • fiber
  • folic acid
  • calcium
  • vitamin C
  • vitamins
  • quercetin, an antioxidant, that is thought to fight cancer

Leeks can be grown in the vegetable garden for most of the year. they are well worth growing with and have an important nutritional value.

  1. We will have to try leeks on your recommendation, having never grown them. Do they require the same treatment as onions? By the way, I have some onion seeds that were started indoors and are ready to go outside, how deep do they go into the ground?

    Leeks are really worth a go - as summer leeks, baby leeks & all through the winter. We dug one tonight!
    They do require the same feeding/fertiliser regime as onions - but leeks need much deeper soil as they grow down a long way. Also, leeks need more space and we plant them with wider rows.
    The onion transplants should be placed just deep enough to stop them falling over.
