Planting Shallots in the Vegetable Garden
The Yellow Moon variety of shallot:
- is disease resistant
- has an excellent skin.
Shallots require soil to be:
- deeply cultivated
- well drained
The sets are pushed into the soil so that the tips are just showing, as shown in the photo below. Click on the image to enlarge it.
The shallots were planted 20 cm apart, in rows 30 cm apart. This is wider spacing than normal, because:
- it is easier to hoe between the shallots in the early stages, if there is more space for the hoe
- return on effort is paramount!
