4 easy vegetable seeds to grow

Four easy lots of vegetable seeds for the new gardener to grow are:

Radish - French Breakfast

  • sow from March to July
  • 1cm deep very thinly
  • thin plants to 5cm apart within the row
  • may be ready in 5 weeks

Courgettes

  • plant May - June, or earlier in pots to be planted out after the last frost
  • need plenty of room - 1sq meter per plant
  • dig a hole the size of a bucket and fill it with compost. Tread it down and cover the compost with half the soil taken out of the hole
  • plant the seed in the soil
  • surround the seed with a circle of rough gravel or soot, to keep the slugs away
  • feed the courgettes every 2 weeks once they are fruiting

Runner beans - Summer Medley

  • plant May - June, or earlier in pots to be planted out after the last frost
  • productive & look pretty
  • varieties - Scarlet Emperor or Painted Lady
  • grow in a trench 50cm deep and with plenty of well rotted manure
  • put the soil back in the trench and push 3 beans in a group - 5cm down, 25cm apart
  • make a bamboo frame or wigwam - with a pole at each group of beans
  • tie the young plants in as they grow. The plants wind themselves round the poles without help
  • pick the beans every day to ensure more keep coming

  1. I just tried to grow radish’s in a big container but they did not work. The leaves looked awesome, but the radish..was just not right. I think it may be too hot here for them to grow in a container.
