Eat Brussel Sprout Shoots

Posted by TopVeg - April 3rd, 2008

The Brussels sprout stalks have been stripped of their sprouts, but the tiny sprouts at the top of the stalk are starting to ‘blow’ and produce flowering shoots.

The photo above shows 2 bare sprout stalks behind & a new sprout flower in the foreground. The flower has come from one of the sprouts which remained on the stalk.

The photos below show sprouts which are gradually changing to flower shoots.

These flowering shoots can be picked & eaten like sprouting broccoli.

This can be a lean time of year in the vegetable garden. The Brussels sprout shoots can be eaten, thus filling the gap!

  1. I like that! I’m not sure it would work in Sweden, but the more chances to eat green, the better.

  2. Great idea! I hate to waste any part of ANY plant! I just found out that you can eat radish leaves! Actually not in a salad because they are pretty rough, but in soup, YES!

  3. Hi Rosegeranium
Thanks for dropping by! Do you grow brassicas in your indoor garden?

  4. Hi Deb

That is interesting - I bet the radish leaves are ‘peppery’!
