The leather jackets continue to damage the young cabbage, by eating through the cabbage stalk.
The damage looks as though the cabbage stalk has been shreaded, as the leather jacket eats the soft material and the fibres are left.
The leather jackets can be easily found just under the surface of the soil. They have been particularly damaging this year, possibly because their development into Daddy Long Legs has been slowed by the cold weather.
The damage to young cabbage plants by leather jackets is serious and
terminal, as they completely sever the cabbage stalk, separating the
leaves from the roots.
