Be patient and they will ripen all of a sudden. A sharp cold spell often encourages ripening

If you want to pick the green tomatoes so that they ripen indoors, there are several situations recommended for ripening. Place the green tomatoes:

  • on kitchen window sill
  • in a cool dark place with one red one
  • in an enclosed space (such as a brown paper bag) with red tomatoes
  • in an enclosed space with banana skins

The present cool temperatures and lack of sun will contribute to the reason that green tomatoes not going red.

  1. Not heard the one about banana skins. It must be ethylene, a hormone that causes them to ripen.
