What are Mangetout and Sugar Snap Peas?

Mangetout is an immature pea which is eaten in the pod, sugar snap peas are slightly more mature & can be eaten as mangetout – or as peas separately.

Peas eaten as flat podded (such as the OregonSugarPod) are known as Snow Peas.

Mangetout:

  • eat the whole pod when it is still immature
  • French for eat (mange) all (tout) – eat it all

Sugar snap:

  • can be eaten as mangetout – ie. eat the whole pod
  • or eat pods and peas separately
  • strings must be removed before eating – to do this, pinch the very tip of the pea, getting hold of the string. Pull the string up the straightest side toward the stem end; pinch off the stem end and continue pulling the string until there is no more.

Varieties of mangetout & sugar snap peas:

Mangetout take about 68 days to reach harvest and sugar snap peas will be ready in about 85 days.

Comment:

Mange tout describes the whole area of peas eaten along with their pods. Peas eaten as flat podded (such as the OSP) are known as Snow Peas, the others as you say are Sugar Snaps.
