Taking up gardening in middle age can extend life by two years, according to a report in The Daily Telegraph.
“Men who do three hours of gardening a week in their 50s live two years longer than their sedentary counterparts, research has found.
The study involved 2,205 men aged 50 in 1970-3 and living in Uppsala, Sweden.
After adjusting for other risk factors, the researchers estimate that men who reported high levels of physical activity, defined as three hours of sport or heavy gardening a week, from age 50 were expected to live 2.3 years longer than sedentary men and 1.1 years longer than men who reported medium levels of physical activity. ”

Hi Lilymarlene – an interesting point – it must apply to women, too. Sorry I did not pick up on this! Thanks for pointing it out. TopVeg
