How to Grow Nasturtium or Indian Cress

*Nasturtium or Indian Cress * (Latin name – Tropaeolum majus)  annuals or perennials, but in the UK neither type is hardy.

*Plant Height*
– 20cm/8in , spreads to form a carpet – will climb and trail

*Crops*
– June to first frost

*Where to Sow*
- Outdoors, directly into ground, where they are to flower.

*Sowing time*
– after frosts

*How to Sow Nasturtiums*

Prepare the ground well

* rake soil to a fine tilthe

* Sow 20mm / ¾” deep, in rows 30cm/12” apart.

*For earlier flowering sow in pots*: Sow seed, 1cm / ½” deep, 3 seeds per 7.5cm (3in) pot, seed compost. Place at 20-29C (68-86F) until after germination. Harden off before planting out after risk of frost.

*Site *

Full sun

Will grow in any soil, even if poor.
Vigorous in gardens, window boxes & pots

*Use*

Leaves & flowers have a peppery flavour like watercress

Chopped leaves & flowers flavour butter, cream cheese and vinegar

Green seed pods can be pickled in vinegar and used as capers

Seed pods can be stored pickled in vinegar
