Chive plants have sprung up below the herb trough – self-sown chives grown from seed that has dropped down from the trough.
Chives have a tight, pink bud which gradually bursts into a pretty flower.
The fruiting bodies are untidy , papery structures, but the black seed can be seen inside.
When ripe, the black seeds drop out of the seed head, and grow new chives from the seed.
