The Vicarage Vegetable Garden

Filed under: Uncategorized — TopVeg @ 7:08 pm

The Vicarage Vegetable Garden was the subject of our harvest festival sermon this morning.

How nice to know that the vicar grows veg.  That must encourage a few more people to have a go – particularly when they learn that all is not perfect in The Vicarage Vegetable Garden, but even so it produces vegetables which are enjoyed.

The vicar likes French beans, & planted:

  • climbing beans under a wigwam (made by his wife!)
  • bush beans in the flower border

But he gradually realised that he had got it wrong – the beans under the wigwam were not climbing & the beans in the border were climbing up the flower stems like mad!  He begged some canes from a sympathetic parishioner – & though the visual display may be surprising, the beans have been copious and delicious!

Another interesting fact was that the vicar had a celebratory dinner on Wednesday when the first carrot was eaten and enjoyed!  How many vegetable gardeners have these celebratory dinners when the first of the crop is consumed, just like the vicar celebrating the vegetables grown in The Vicarage Vegetable Garden?
