Kitchen Garden | Grow Your Own Food!

Did you want to save money in this tough economy? Grow your own food! Few things would be easier than simply walking outside and grabbing your groceries. It would also be more reassuring knowing that it is you who grew the vegetables on your dinner table, instead of chemical pesticide using farmers. The concept of a kitchen garden has been around for centuries, but is now finding rejuvenated popularity with these tough economic conditions. Let’s take a quick look at kitchen gardens and how you can benefit from having one on your property.

Even though a kitchen garden may not be one of the first garden ideas you had, there are many practical uses for this type of garden. Obviously, growing your own food comes with the benefits of saving money on the costs of herbs and vegetables (possibly fruit as well, if you plant the required trees). Those benefits aside, there is the added benefit of saving money on the transportation costs from getting to and from the grocery store. Further, because you are going to be driving less, you will be producing fewer emissions from your vehicle and thus helping environment.

When you are planning your kitchen garden, plan for a small garden and work your way up to a larger one. This will help you refine your gardening skills by slowly exposing you to all that is involved with vegetable gardening. Another beginner’s tip is to weed diligently and make sure you are starting with clean soil in your garden.

Make sure you only plant the vegetables and herbs you plan on using. If you are unsure, then plant a small quantity of that variety of veggie and see how it goes. There is no need to rush a kitchen garden.  Also, it is important to remember that these gardens usually need about 8 hours a day of sunlight in order to flourish, so be mindful to make sure you kitchen garden gets its sun! Keep in mind that herbs are not only practical for cooking purposes, but they also blossom into beautiful flowers which add aesthetic value to your garden.

When situating your kitchen garden, consider places that are close to your house or outdoor rooms. This situation is optimal because it ensures that your garden isn’t placed so far away that you are discouraged from using it. Also keep in mind that a more open space is best for a kitchen garden, but you can adopt container gardening and place vegetable plants on your window sills.

Lastly, as with any type of garden you want to keep a watchful eye on pests. Using various methods of organic pest control can ensure that you maintain healthy plants while eliminating unwanted visitors.

Enjoy!
