Several vegetable gardeners are reporting their disappointment with asparagus peas.
Asparagus peas do take a lot of picking – but we enjoy them for a change. We like them still crunchy – so only cook them for a few minutes.
We are not growing them this year as they do not really warrant their space in the garden – they do not produce enough to eat per sq. meter – compared to other veg. It is a shame, as they do cheer the garden up!
Have you tried flash frying them? They are good in stir fries. We were sent this tip: http://topveg.com/2009/04/how-to-cook-asparagus-peas/

The asparagus peas have come to harvest in week 14.

The pods are difficult to see, so harvesting is slow. The pods have
frilly edges and should be picked when they are about an inch long.

pea seeds

Three of the 35 asparagus peas planted on 5 April started to emerge, after 8 days in the heated propagator.

The problem now is keeping these seed leaves healthy whilst waiting for the rest of the peas to germinate.
TopVeg has not grown the asparagus peas before and is our entry for the Growing Challenge.
