Planting Beetroot Seeds – Beta vulgaris

Filed under: root veg — Tags: , , — TopVeg @ 4:03 pm

Beetroot, also known as Red Beet (latin name – Beta vulgaris) was planted today:

    * variety – Boltardy
    * rows 30cm apart (wide enough to get the hoe down)
    * depth 2cm
    * seeds 2cm apart in the row

The seedbed was dry because it had been covered to keep the rain off.

The corky beetroot ’seed’ in the packet is really a fruit containing several seeds. So they will need thinning, even though the ’seeds’ have been carefully spaced.

The beetroot seeds were then gently watered in to tighten the soil in the row.

How to prepare beetroot for cooking

Filed under: root veg — Tags: , — TopVeg @ 4:25 pm

To Prepare  Beetroot for cooking:

* Pull the Beetroot when they are on the small side, as they have a better taste
& texture.  The ideal size is that of a golf ball up to a cricket ball size.
* Tear off the leaves leaving 2″ of stalk
* Leave the roots on
* Wash the beetroot in cold water

The Beetroot is now ready for cooking.  If you cut the leaves too close to the beet, or if you cut the roots, the beetroot will ‘bleed’ and all the red colour could be lost from the beetroot.

We hope that children, as well as established vegetable gardeners, will
find this useful, as they can grow beetroot in their section of the
vegetable garden.
