White Fruit & Veg lower risk of Stroke

Consumption of White Fruits and Vegetables Is Associated With Lower Risk of Stroke.

A study by Oude Griep et al, published in the September issue of Stroke, examined the association of fruit and vegetable intake categorized according to the color of the edible portion with 10-year incidence of stroke.  They found that higher intakes of white fruit & veg protect against stroke; while coloured fruit & veg do not.

Apples and pears are better sources of potassium.  The study found that each 25 gram/day increase in consumption of white fruit and veg was associated with a 9% lower risk of stroke.

When is it time to pick pears?

When is the right time to pick pears?   Pears will ripen according to variety, weather and location.

picking-pears picking-pears

Pears are ready to pick when they are:

  • firm – but the flesh is very slightly springy.
  • just turning yellowish green. If too green they will never get their best flavor.
  • just turning the seeds brown.
  • ready to come away from the tree with a slight twist & lift. If the fruit does not come off easily, the pears are not ready to pick.

      pick-pears pick-pear

Pears should never be allowed to ripen on the tree because:

  • they become gritty.
  • the area around the core turns brown, soft and mushy.

Pears ripen best off the tree.

Jargonelle is an early variety of pear which is ready in early August, Beth is usually picked in late August.

Gorham & Merton Pride   ripen in early September.  Beurre Hardy & Onward ripen mid-September.  Beurre Superfin, Conference, Durondeau, Fertility Improved,  Seckle, Thompsons & Louise Bonne de Jersey ripen at the end of September.

Williams‘ Bon Chretien are usually picked in September.

Doyenne du Comice, Packham’s Triumph & Josephine de Malines are ripe in mid-October.  The time to pick Concorde & Winter Nelis,  late pears, is the end of October.

Wasps have been a big problem this year and have caused a lot of damage to the pears on the tree.

The wasps seem to find the stalk end of the pear an easy place to start.

Pick Pears before the Wind

Pick Pears before the Wind damages them.  Branches and twigs hitting the pears will bruise them and the pears will rot quickly on the tree.

We have picked several baskets of pears.

But the damaged, bruised and pecked pears have been seperated as they will not keep.  So we will use these first.  If we are not eating the raw pears quickly enough, I will simmer them in red wine before freezing them for a special occassion!

Pears will ripen

  • in the house at cool room temperature.
  • Traditionally, pears were put in a drawer (so dark) in a chest in the spare room – which was cool.
  • Winter pears, such as Anjour, Comice and Bosc require 3 or 4 weeks in the fridge after picking to ripen properly.
