How to Grow Strawberry Plants from Runners.

It is easy to raise new strawberry plants from runners. Strawberry runners must originate from a healthy mother plant.

* select a healthy plantlet on a runner, in June or July

* cut off the runner beyond the plantlet

trim-strawberry-runner

* fill a pot with compost. This pot can be buried in the ground, close to the plantlet. If the strawberries are grown under plastic, the pot will have to be kept above ground.
* peg the plantlet to the compost, but leave it attached to the mother plant.

In a few weeks, new plants will be big enough to be planted out as shown in the link.

Planting Alicante Tomatoes in GrowPots

Tomato – Latin name ‘Lycopersicon esculentum’

The variety ‘Alicante’ is a cordon type which is best in the greenhouse, but can be grown outside in a sheltered spot.

We are using some growpots which fit into growbags for planting tomatoes.

The advantage is that the tomato food is targeted on the roots in the inside pot. The outer pot is used for water, and it makes watering much quicker. Water can be left in the outer reservoir to trickle into the growbag when required.

Three growpots fit into one growbag. The tomatoes are planted so that the compost is the same level as the outer chamber. This leaves room for a pint of water to be added to the top of the pot.

The advantages of the growpot are:

    *      watering will be easier

    *      the tomato will be well watered

    *      tomato food will be used more efficiently

Vegetables grown in modules.

A module is a chamber or cell, filled with peat or growing medium, into which a seed is placed. Commercial growers use cell-grown seedlings produced in modular trays grown in greenhouses.

The seed is given optimum growing conditions of temperature, water and nutrients. The young seedlings are hardened off outside, before being planted in the ground.
Many garden centers sell module grown plants. They are more expensive than a pack of seeds, but they do have advantages.

Plant Onion Sets

Onion sets are immature onion bulbs specially grown for planting.

check-onion-sets

check-onion-sets

Gardeners prefer to grow sets, rather than onion seeds, because sets are:

    * quick maturing
    * less prone to disease
    * able to grow in a rougher seedbed
    * happy in most sorts of soil
    * more suitable for later springs in the North

But, sets used to have a tendency to ‘bolt’.

Bolting means they go to seed, that is, instead of producing a nice big onion, they put all their energy into producing a seed head.

Modern sets are heat treated to destroy the internal flower bud, & stop bolting.

TO PLANT SETS:

    * Prepare the bed by digging over & raking flat. Mix in some well rotted compost, farm mix manure into seedbedyard manure or general fertiliser.
    * Place the measuring stick on the row, and plant the sets every 10cm, leaving 23 cm between the rows

    * Push the sets into the soft earth, & bring the earth back around them, leaving just the tip showing

push-onion-in

    * Watch for birds, as they like to pull the tips, so that the sets are pulled out of the ground. If the birds start to do this, cover the sets with netting, string or cotton, to keep the birds off       until the sets have grown good roots.  Gently press the onion sets down for the first few weeks after planting, in case they have  been disturbed.

Plant early potatoes

The soil covered with polythene 5 weeks ago is now dry and warm enough to plant early potatoes.

The bed is 1.8 meters wide. Two rows of potatoes will run down the length of the bed. To measure this out:

    * place a stake in the center of the bed (0.9m from edge)
    * the distance between the center of the rows is 70cm. So, place a  stake 35cm from center stake. Repeat on the other side.
    * at the other end of the bed, place 3 more stakes, as above
    * tie the end of a ball of string on one of the outside stakes, and  stretch the string to its opposite number at the other end of the  bed. This marks the middle of the potato row.
    * repeat, running the string along the center of the other row.

Lay a measuring tape in the middle of the row. Put the seed potatoes on the edge of the row, ready to put in at the correct spacing.

The small seed is put 20 cm apart, & the large seed is 25 cm apart. The seed is put this close because there are only 2 rows, & the outside edge of each row has a path running beside it. So there will be plenty of space, light & air. Also, these are early potatoes, which will be lifted as soon as they are the size of a hen’s egg. So they can be planted closer than main crops, which will be left to grow bigger potatoes.

Make a hole in the trench, by pulling the soil back with a trowel.

Sprinkle soil over the potato, so that it is just covered. Leave the trench, and it will act as protection, creating a warm, damp environment, which will encourage growth.

Cover the planted potatoes with polythene, to provide protection from the forecasted frosts.

A few potatoes were planted 3 weeks ago. One has just emerged, & is showing a tiny shoot

Time of Maturity in Potatoes

Time of Maturity
An early potato will produce tubers in a shorter growing period than a main crop potato.

  • Early potatoes are planted from January to March and are ready for digging from May-July.
  • Second earlies are planted between February and May and harvested from July to October.
  • Main crop potatoes are planted in April and harvesting is in September and October.

Second earlies and main crop can be stored over the winter.
