Waterlogged Plot

The plot is waterlogged!  20mm of water was tipped out of the rain gauge today, and 12 mm yesterday.  Last week spring seemed to be on the way as the sun and wind had dried out the soil.  But that was a false start – it will be several weeks before the garden can be worked.  It is unlikely that the potatoes will be planted in March.

The fleece covering the potato ground will keep the frost out, but unfortunately this rain has gone right through it – resulting in a waterlogged plot.

Driest March since 1961

March has been the driest since 1961 for England and Wales,  according to  Dr Liz Bentley of the Royal Meteorological Society, & founder of the Weather Club

Dr Bentley  says the next few weeks could be critical for water companies, farmers and wildlife, and could determine if there are hosepipe bans later in the year.  Farmers & gardeners have already started to water their crops.

It is unusual to irrigate crops this early in the year & it is due to lack of rainfall over a prolonged period.

The Big Butterfly Count  newsletter says that ‘despite the incredibly cold weather last December, butterflies and moths have got off to a ‘flying’ start this year. February was a very warm month, by normal UK standards, and March was much drier and sunnier than average.’   In fact it was the driest March since 1961.

String stops broad beans falling over

It is worth putting string round broad beans & tying to a stake if they are growing on fertile soil, as they grow tall and tend to fall over in heavy rain or wind.

LodgedBroadBeans LodgedBroadBeans

When the broadbean plant blows over it ‘lodges’ with other broad bean plants and stays close to the soil.  Some of the leaves will be hidden from bright light so the broad bean pods will not be fed so well which means that they will not grow and fill with good sized broad beans.

The beans in the picture lodged at a late stage in their growing period, so will provide a decent harvest.  But if the lodging had happened at flowering time, the broad bean pods would not have filled properly.

The broad bean plants are quite heavy, particularly when wet from rain, so it is worth putting some string round them to stop them falling over.
